In 1972, Gatewood was winner of the painting award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She was a 1981 recipient of a Southeastern Seven Grant from the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, and in 1984 was presented the North Carolina Governor's Award in Fine Arts. She earned the North Carolina Poster Award for the 1987 U.S. Olympic Festival, and in 1993 was honored by the University of North Carolina with one of four postal cachet commissions created to celebrate the bicentennial of the University of North Carolina. |

Received her Master of Arts degree from Ohio State University, Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and also studied at Harvard University. Studied art history and painting in Salzburg, Austria. |
