Notes |
Bireline's work has been widely exhibited and can be found in many public and private collections, such as the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC. George states, "I was driving to the mountains at night and thought I saw something scurry across the road...which gave me the idea for it. It has this person in the backpack where the title comes from, Ascension. It has this helicopter...this monster creature and it has this skull there on the dashboard ...and there in the distance you can see just the hint of a hydrogen explosion...And spacially, the viewer always occupies the driver's seat...you're inside and outside the painting at the same time. If indeed monsters do walk the land...metaphorically or actually, then we will want to get outa here, we will want to ascend to some other level, some other spiritual level or some other secular level." |
